Anthony Githinji, a Kenyan national, is the Team Leader at AquaSustain and a seasoned development finance professional with over 27 years experience in blended financing approaches, institutional development and capacity building, WaSH, banking and microfinance. Anthony’s previous work experience includes over 13 years with Water.org where he served as the Africa region business director with leadership and oversight over Water.org business and programs in the Sub-saharan Africa region. Anthony also previously served as the country director responsible for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and was a pioneer senior program manager that initiated the first Watercredit programs in Africa.
Under Anthony’s leadership, Water.org mobilized over USD 1.4 billion, through over 2.5 million loans, reaching over 11 million people, through over 20 implementing partners ranging from large commercial banks, microfinance institutions, microfinance associations, utilities and development banks in the Africa region. Anthony has supervised multiple research assignments including country assessments in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Nigeria and market demand studies, conceptualization and design of programs with over 25 institutions (financial institutions, MF associations, utilities etc), as well as numerous technical assistance, monitoring and evaluation assignments in Africa.
Anthony previously also served in leadership roles with several financial institutions namely Salaam Microfinance bank, Aga Khan Foundation -FMFA, Sisdo Microfinance and KRep (now Sidian Bank).
Anthony holds an MBA (Finance option) Degree from the University of Nairobi, a B. Com (Accounting Option) Honors Degree from Kenyatta University and is a Chartered Public Accountant. In addition, Anthony has attended numerous international development workshops and courses, including the Boulder Microfinance Program. He brings on board a rich development finance exposure, with a focus on WASH blended financing, institutional capacity development, human capital development and mentorship and a good working knowledge of microfinance delivery methods and operating systems. An avid reader, Anthony is fluent in English and Kiswahili.
